Lokpal may miss Parl deadline - timesnow.tv
As uncertainty hung over Lokpal Bill coming up in the Rajya Sabha in the current Parliament session ending on May 22, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee tonight said the House's Business Advisory Committee will take a decision. "Only two (working) days are there....The Business Advisory Committee will have to take it(Bill) up," Mukherjee, Leader of Lok Sabha, said, adding. “You will have to wait for the next few days.”

Mukherjee made the comment when he was asked by newsmen in Kolkata whether any decision has been taken on the issue of bringing the Lokpal Bill in the Upper House in the current session itself. BJP said the legislation should be passed before the end of the current session, criticising the Union government over the delay in the passage of the Bill for creating an anti-corruption ombudsman.

"Four ministers from the government had met the Opposition leaders on the Lokpal Bill issue. BJP had given suggestions on it and the party is ready to support them in the Parliament. Two (working) days are remaining for the session to end and we expect the government to pass the Bill," BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said at a press conference in Mumbai.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi deliberated yesterday on the way ahead for the much-debated legislation. There have been indications that the government is now having second thoughts on bringing the bill in this session. This was because differences still persist on some of the issues despite the government holding consultations on it with leaders of a number of political parties, sources said.

On Wednesday, Minister of State of Personnel V Narayanasamy had said that the government stands by the commitment to bring the bill in the present session. The amended form of the bill includes deletion of the controversial provision for Lokayukta creation and bringing more transparency in appointment of CBI chief. Debate on the bill, passed by the Lok Sabha in December last year, could not be completed in the upper house during the last Winter session due to technical reasons.

Joseph Salang reminds rural folk to reject money politics - star.com.my

JULAU (Sarawak): Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang has reminded the rural people to reject money politics in the general election.

He said he had learned that certain people planned to spend a lot of money to buy votes in the next general election to topple Barisan Nasional (BN) incumbents, especially from his Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).

The giver and receiver of money would be penalised upon conviction of the offence, he said when officiating at a housewarming last night at the Rh Laman longhouse in Nanga Nyuyau here and two other longhouses in the constituency.

Salang, who is deputy information, communications and culture minister, said people who used money to win the elections would neglect their constituents later by giving the excuse that they had been paid in advance.

He also said that the opposition elected representatives would have neither the means nor the resources to undertake development projects and programmes, big or small.

On the continuing attempts by a certain local politician to discredit him, Salang said he would not respond to the many allegations made.

"I believe the majority of the people in Julau know the truth. This is based on the increasing pledges of support for the Barisan Nasional and myself," he added. - Bernama

India's forex reserves drop by USD 1.37 billion - New Kerala

Mumbai, May 19 : India's foreign exchange reserves declined by USD 1.37 billion to USD 291.80 billion for the week ended May 11, largely due to drop in the value of core currency reserves, official data showed.

The forex reserves has dropped sharply for the second consecutive week. It had declined by USD 2.18 billion in the previous week.

Foreign currency assets, the biggest component of the forex reserves kitty, fell by USD 1.33 billion to USD 257.85 billion during the week under review, according to the Reserve Bank of India's weekly statistical supplement.

The RBI did not provide any reasons for the change in foreign currency assets.

It said the assets expressed in US dollar terms included the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US currencies such as the pound sterling, euro and yen held in reserve.

However, the RBI is understood to have sold dollars from the reserves to curb the slide in the value of rupee.

The Indian rupee slumped to a new intra-day low of 54.91 against a dollar Friday. This was the third consecutive record low of rupee in the last three days. The rupee had hit a low of 54.60 against a dollar Thursday, surpassing previous day's record of 54.52.

Runners raise money for Pitt Community College scholarships - WNCT

WINTERVILLE, N.C. -- More than 100 people came out for the Second Annual Bulldog Run today at Pitt Community College.

A few of 9 On Your Side’s reporters and anchors were there to help PCC’s Alumni Association sponsor the race. Andrea Blanford, Lindsay Landry and Rich Klindworth participated in the race, too.

The early morning event featured a 5-K run, a one mile fun run and a kids’ dash.

All money raised will benefit scholarships and educational activities at the college. Many runners say supporting students who are financially in need inspired them to participate.

“Pitt’s a very good place to get started at,” says runner Ron Duffett, whose daughter graduated from PCC. “And any kind of financial aid that they can get to get started like that is to our benefit, to everybody’s benefit.”

Runner Danny Ellis agrees, “It’s a really good thing. It gets me my chance to run, gets me my exercise. And I know some kid somewhere along the line hopefully it’s going help them in their life.”

Prizes were awarded to the top three male and female runners. Organizers say prior to the race, they raised more than $5,000 dollars for scholarships.
